A Peek Behind the Door

January 23rd is a big day in the literary world because 2017's Newbery Award-winning book for exemplary children's literature will be announced! To honor this, we will do a Newbery unit study. Students will first choose an independent book that has either won or been in the running to win the award. While students independently read, we will review plot structure and the Freytag model. Students will also research what makes a Newbery winner. Our whole-class novel will be Hoot and we will tie it in to Mrs. Harrison's science class.
